The Lure of the Sea...

I've come across an amazing trove of vintage images lately and these are some of my very favorite.  Ancient ships, compasses and anchors, even a mermaid in the same style!

It's getting hot in here...

If this office was a hot air balloon we'd be soaring!  Speaking of which, here is a fantastic little snippet of Hot Air Balloon Ephemera...

I've kept the vintage patina on this piece...I think it adds to the charm!

Squid-deliciousness!

Some five years ago I picked up a book about Giant squids at the used book store.  It was long before the Japanese managed to photograph one in the deep water and all the stories were steeped in legend and mystery.  Giant Squid were categorized alongside Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.  Today we know better, but there is still something captivating about the notion of exotic sea creatures living in a deep sea world we can barely comprehend.

And this is what inspired me to create...

A cephalopods photoshop brush set!  Oh, my the squidly delights!

And since this blog is all about the free and beautiful, here is a one of these squiddies for your artistic pleasure.  Enjoy!

A month of moving...

Just last night David and I unloaded what we hope will be the last Cargo Van full of furniture we will see for a while.  All the driving back and forth to Chicago has eaten my blog time, but I'm back once again with delicious treats for one and all.

Here is a refreshing cocktail in celebration of our successful move.  Cheers!

Sweet Summer Strawberries

I've got a beautiful new set of Victorian Images up on Etsy and ArtFire...
Sweet Summer Strawberries.  Its a small set, only three images, but I think you'll agree that they are really scrumptious.  These images come from a Victorian chromolithograph that had extensive damage.  I have painstakingly restored them and extracted two of the berries to stand alone.  I can see a million uses for these cute little berries.

This is a much smaller version of one of the berries included in the set...still pretty nice, though.  This berry will print at about 2" wide.  The berries included in the set are nearly twice that size!

This particular owl is ONLY available through the blog...enjoy!

Victorian Schoolchildren Silhouette

I love this little illustration from a Victorian book of children's tales. I've cleaned it up a bit and removed the background so you can place it on whatever paper you'd like. It would make a great addition to a back to school scrapbook!

Post Card with Handwriting

This is a wonderful little Bookmark/postcard from 1904.  I love the elegant but casual handwriting and the soft aging of the paper.

Victorian Schoolgirl at Desk

This cute little schoolgirl at her desk was originally published in a Victorian book of Children's rhymes and fairy tales.  I've cleaned it up a bit and am posting here both a jpg of the art in context on its slightly yellowed paper and a nice digital stamp .png file in which the original brown ink and printing irregularities have been preserved.

Colorized Girl with Puppy Dog

Cleaned and Colorized
Original Scan
I found this image in a badly worn book of children's stories.  The paper was yellowed and brittle with lots of stains (looks like coffee, but who lets their kids drink coffee?).  This particular image of a little girl and her dog was too cute to let go, so I have painstakingly cleaned it and added color to the plate.  I've included both the original scan and the cleaned and colorized final image.

Victorian Woman with Vibrating Contraption

This peculiar device is the "New Life Vibrator" and this image from the "Health and How to Get It" suggests one of many possible uses.  This beautiful young woman is treating her dandruff by massaging her scalp.  The book also suggests that one might use the vibrator to reduce headaches, but somehow it seems more likely to cause them!
A larger version of this file as well as 49 other images of Victorian medical treatments and contraptions are available in a package on PassionFruitsImages.Etsy.com and PassionFruitsImages.ArtFire.com.

Victorian Man with Mustache

I recently came upon a trove of these fellows, dignified Victorian gentlemen with lovely mustaches. They all have pronounced newspaper printers dots which I think add to their charm.

Victorian Atomizer

This odd little image comes from the pages of a 1908 guide to home health care. There is some creepy stuff in this book!

This image of a Victorian era atomizer has been carefully edited to create a digital stamp with transparent background. Its offered here at a nice large size. More of these odd little images will be available at PassionFruitsImages.Etsy.com and PassionFruitsImages.ArtFire.com very soon.

Art Nouveau Fairy

Art Nouveau Fairy

An absolutely STUNNING black and white block print from a 1901 book of children's fairy tales.  This is one of the prettiest fairy images in my collection!

This lovely lady is also available at a larger size as part of a collection of fairy tale images on Artfire and Etsy.
